What to see and do in La Mudarra

La Mudarra
Village
La Mudarra is a village of about 165 inhabitants in the Montes Torozos district, in the province of Valladolid, 27 kilometres northwest of the capital along the N-601 road. It stands at 842 metres of altitude, on flat terrain where the río Hornija, a tributary of the Duero, rises at the Fuente de Porras. It lives from farming and forestry, and within its municipal area lies the large electrical substation of Red Eléctrica de España, which sends to Madrid the surplus energy generated at the power plants of the north-western peninsula, covering up to 40% of Madrid's demand. Its festivities, in honour of San Antonio de Padua, are held on 13 June.

Nature
The río Hornija, which gives its name and water to half of the Montes Torozos district, rises at the Fuente de Porras, in the municipal area of La Mudarra, at about 848 metres above sea level on the páramo, and flows down, deeply cut, toward the west, carving the slopes typical of these lands. It is a tributary of the Duero, and on its course through Valladolid province it passes through towns such as Peñaflor de Hornija, Torrelobatón and Villalar de los Comuneros, before flowing into the Duero near San Román de Hornija, already on the border with Zamora province.

Curiosity
This village of 167 inhabitants houses one of the most important electrical substations in Spain: from it the electricity of the whole peninsular northwest is distributed and around 40% of the demand of the city of Madrid is covered.
