What to see and do in Peñaflor de Hornija

Peñaflor de Hornija
Village
Peñaflor de Hornija is a town of the Montes Torozos, in Valladolid, leaning over the edge of the páramo, with views of the castle of Torrelobatón; the Camino de Santiago passes through here between San Pelayo and La Mudarra. It has about 350 inhabitants and more than fourteen centuries of history, with remains of a 14th-century wall. It preserves houses bearing coats of arms, such as that of the count of Peñaflor, from the 16th century, and the church of Santa María, from the 13th century and built entirely of stone, with Baroque altarpieces from the 17th-18th centuries and a 16th-century painted panel in the sacristy; in the centre of the village the walls of another 13th-century church also still stand. On the outskirts, the hermitage of the Cristo de las Eras holds a Christ figure 1.70 metres tall; on the third Sunday of September a bonfire of holm oak branches is lit in its honour.
Church of San Salvador de Peñaflor de Hornija
Monument
Romanesque church of the 12th and 13th centuries that shares the leading role with the church of Santa María de la Expectación, of the 13th, of ashlar and barrel vault, and with the hermitage of the Santo Cristo de las Eras, raised in the 16th century on the edge of the moorland.
Slopes and viewpoint of the Hornija valley
Nature
The village looks out over the edge of the moorland and passes for the best viewpoint of the whole Hornija valley: from its slopes the view reaches the floodplain, the cereal fields and, in the distance, the mass of the castle of Torrelobatón outlined against the plain.
