What to see and do in Cogeces del Monte

Cogeces del Monte
Village
Cogeces del Monte is a town of 640 inhabitants and 74 km² of municipal land, in Campo de Peñafiel although historically linked to the sexmo of Valcorba, within the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Cuéllar. Chipped stone axes document human presence from the Palaeolithic, and Roman coins attest to the passage of Rome before the barbarian invasions of the 5th century and the Muslim domination, which brought the area under the Emirate and Caliphate of Córdoba. After the conquest of Toledo by Alfonso VI in 1085 it remained linked to Peñafiel and Cuéllar. Its economy, based on grain, sugar beet, sunflowers and churra sheep farming, is completed today by rural tourism. It preserves the monastery of Santa María de la Armedilla and a municipal science museum with a notable mineral collection.
Monastery of Santa María de la Armedilla
Monument
The monastery of Santa María de la Armedilla, now in ruins, stands about 3.8 kilometres from Cogeces del Monte. Its origin lies in the chance discovery, by some shepherds, of an image of the Virgin in a cave hollowed out of the rock; a Romanesque carving of the Virgin, from the late 12th century, is preserved in the parish church of Cogeces. In the early 15th century, Prince Fernando de Antequera proposed donating it to the monks of la Mejorada de Olmedo to found a Hieronymite monastery, whose main buildings — church, three-storey cloister and the palace of the Dukes of Alburquerque, patrons of the monastery — were erected in the 16th century. After the 19th-century confiscation it was left abandoned; today the walls of the church, remains of the cloister, cellars and cisterns survive. The ruins were declared Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection) in 2007.

Activity
At the end of August the residents carry the image of the Virgin on their shoulders the four kilometres that separate the village from the ruins of the monastery, on the busiest day of the local festive calendar.
