What to see and do in Osma

Osma
Village
Osma is the early medieval settlement that gives its name to the municipality of El Burgo de Osma-Ciudad de Osma; on the neighbouring Castro hill stood the Arévacan city of Uxama Argaela, later Roman, whose archaeological remains are divided between that height and the plain where the hamlet stands today. On the other bank of the river Ucero, opposite Osma, a new urban centre grew from the 12th century onwards around the cathedral restored by San Pedro de Osma, which would eventually become independent as the town of El Burgo de Osma by privilege of Alfonso VIII, to the detriment of the old royal Osma.
Uxama Argaela on the Castro hill
Curiosity
On a tabular spur an Arevacian community settled around the fourth century BC that came to be one of the largest cities of Celtiberia; it preserves houses cut into the rock, cisterns and the layout of its streets.
The destruction of Uxama by Pompey
Historical milestone
Conquered by Rome in 99 BC, the city later supported the rebellion of Sertorius and was razed by Pompey the Great in 72 BC. It was rebuilt shortly afterwards and remained inhabited for centuries.
The castle of Osma
Monument
The castle of Osma stands on a hill between the Ucero and Abión rivers, very close to Osma and a little over a kilometre southwest of El Burgo de Osma (Soria), near the ancient Roman city of Uxama Argaela. This Celtiberian, later Roman, city retained its importance until the late Middle Ages, when it was abandoned and its population moved to present-day Osma, with the castle being built on the hill between the 10th and 11th centuries and modified between the 14th and 15th centuries. Three walled enclosures of irregular plan adapted to the hill are preserved, along with the access gate, a good part of the high curtain walls, and two towers, one of them the keep. Between 2016 and 2020 it was consolidated and restored, with new signage and walkways for visitors.
