Hijes
Village
Hijes is a municipality in the Serranía de Guadalajara, at 1,160 metres altitude, beside the Pajares river and amid holm oak and oak woods, with 24 inhabitants (INE 2025) compared with the 252 it had in the mid-19th century, according to Pascual Madoz. Its church of la Natividad preserves the semicircular Romanesque apse beneath the 16th- and 17th-century alterations. Within its municipal area the pre-Roman necropolis of los Arroyuelos was excavated during the 19th century, in work that involved, among others, Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, Marquis of Cerralbo, and Francisco de Padua Nicolau Bofarull.
