Miedes de Atienza
Village
Miedes de Atienza is a municipality of the northern sierra of Guadalajara, situated at 1,154 metres of altitude near the sierra Pela and with 60 inhabitants. Already mentioned in the Cantar del Cid as a border area, it was settled in the Middle Ages on the southern slope of a natural pass between the fortresses of Gormaz and Atienza, next to an easily defensible hill known today as El Castillo, in order to control Castilian territory south of the Duero; until the 1916 reform it was called simply Miedes. It preserves the church of la Natividad de Nuestra Señora, from the 18th century built over earlier Romanesque elements, the ashlar palace-house of the Beladiez Trujillo family, from the 17th century, and a rollo (justice pillory). Its municipal area contains Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman-period sites.
