What to see and do in Canicosa de la Sierra

Canicosa de la Sierra
Village
Canicosa de la Sierra is a municipality in the province of Burgos, in the comarca of the Sierra de la Demanda, with 410 inhabitants, set at 1127 metres above sea level in the Iberian System, on the southern slope of the Neila and Urbión sierras. Inhabited in pre-Roman times by the Pelendones tribe, who left evidence of it in a hillfort barely perceptible today, it was in the 18th century one of the most notable villages of the Cabaña Real de Carreteros del Reino, after receiving from Charles IV a licence to fell trees. In its surroundings rivers such as the Arlanza and the Duero rise. Today it lives on the timber and stone industries and its livestock herds, and celebrates its patronal festivities in mid-August in honour of the Virgin of Carrascal and Saint Roch.
The communal pine forest of Canicosa
Nature
Continuous stands of Scots pine and maritime pine cover the municipal district above a thousand metres. They are woods owned by the residents, and on their collective management have depended for centuries the village's timber, resin and mushrooms.
