What to see and do in Ólvega

Ólvega
Village
Ólvega is an industrial town in the district of the Moncayo, in the province of Soria, of which it is a head town together with Ágreda; its municipal area also includes the settlement of Muro. It sits at 1,029 metres above sea level on a plain ringed by the sierras of the Moncayo, the Madero and Toranzo, which opens northward towards the valle del río Añamaza, watered by the arroyo de la Vega and the río Araviana. It has around 3,780 inhabitants and had its own station on the Soria-Castejón railway line until 1996. Old iron and lead mines were worked in its municipal area. The crenellated tower of Santa María la Mayor, from the late 15th century, gives the village an air of a fortress, and every September the town celebrates the Cristo de la Cruz a Cuestas.
The Church of Santa María la Mayor
Monument
The church of Santa María la Mayor in Ólvega (Soria) is a Gothic church with an almost fortified appearance, with a crenellated tower and a polygonal chancel typical of the 16th century. The sacristy, covered by a barrel vault, and the tower were built in the late 15th century, while the transept and nave were completed already into the 16th century. In the 1990s the interior was restored and left with exposed stone, its ceiling decorated with elements carved in stone; at the back of the church a retable, also restored in that intervention, is preserved.
The Second Numantia
Historical milestone
The residents refused to swear vassalage to the Count of Medinaceli and the village was burned in the confrontation; the episode earned it the nickname of the second Numancia and remained a local symbol of freedom.
The Refugees of Augustóbriga
Historical milestone
The village's origin is placed in the fifth century, when the Hispano-Romans of Augustóbriga fled here, the city of present-day Muro destroyed by Vandals and Alans on their entry into the Peninsula.
The Iron Mines of Olmacedo
Curiosity
Iron mines are documented in the municipal district as early as 1589, at spots such as Virgilio, Olmacedo and La Almagrera; to these were added lead workings that sustained the village's economy for centuries.
Between Three Mountain Ranges
Nature
The municipality is wedged between the Moncayo to the east, the Sierra del Madero to the west and that of Toranzo to the south, whose high point reaches 1,614 metres; its routes cross oak woods and the holm oak wood of Campiserrado.
Chorizo Day
Food and drink
The village devotes a day to the chorizo of the pig slaughter, heir to the traditions of butchering and marinating the pig that stocked the family larder all year round in the villages of the Moncayo.
The Industrial Estate That Stopped the Depopulation
Curiosity
Against the general emptying of the comarca, Ólvega opened in 1991 an industrial estate of three hundred thousand square metres with factories making car components, wind turbines and household appliances, and keeps more than 3,700 households.
