What to see and do in Noviercas

Noviercas
Village
Noviercas is a town in the district of the Moncayo, in the province of Soria, surrounded by the foothills of the sierras del Madero, Toranzo and Tablado; it has 156 inhabitants. Its most iconic monument is a 10th-century Arab tower that allowed communication with the rest of the towers in the district; after the Christian reconquest, the hamlet belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Soria until King Charles I granted it town status in 1537. Tradition places here the burial of the Seven Infantes of Lara and the refuge of doña Urraca after being repudiated by Alfonso the Battler. Its church of the Santos Justo y Pastor, Gothic from the 16th century and extended in baroque style, is far larger than those of the district, and in August capeas are held in the plaza Mayor.
The Arab Tower of Noviercas
Monument
A watchtower of the late tenth century reaching 23.5 metres in height, with a horseshoe-arched door opening three and a half metres above the ground; in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries battlements were added for the wars with Aragon.
The Church of the Santos Justo y Pastor
Monument
Begun in the sixteenth century in Late Gothic, it was enlarged in the seventeenth with Baroque forms and received in the eighteenth a Neoclassical front: three periods of economic prosperity written into a single building.
The Town Charter of Carlos I
Historical milestone
In 1537 Carlos I granted Noviercas the title of villa, with its own jurisdiction and gallows; in the mid-nineteenth century the village came close to nine hundred and seventy inhabitants, ten times those it keeps today.
The Capeas and the Terrizos
Activity
The August festivities revolve around the capeas and the terrizos, collective meals by groups of friends that bring residents and visitors together for several days in the streets and in the village square.
