What to see and do in Villaciervos

Villaciervos
Village
Villaciervos is a municipality of Soria with 86 inhabitants that includes the hamlet of Villaciervitos, 13 kilometres from the capital, in the comarca of Soria. Its territory, between the sierra de Cabrejas to the north and the páramo de Villaciervos to the west, is largely — 75% — protected for its juniper groves; the rivers Mazos and Izana rise there. Documented since the Middle Ages as part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Soria, in the Sexmo de Frentes, the Censo de Pecheros of 1528 recorded 18 family units as Villaciervos de Abajo. The village preserves a clock tower from 1894 and several ermitas, and on its territory stretches a truffle plantation of more than 600 hectares of mycorrhizal holm oak, next to fields of wheat and rye.
Tower of el reloj de Villaciervos
Monument
Built in 1894, the clock tower marks the centre of the village, which also preserves the church of San Juan Bautista, recently restored, and that of San Blas in the annexed settlement of Villaciervitos.
Conical chimneys of Villaciervos
Curiosity
The settlement preserves the rubble masonry house typical of the area, with conical chimneys finished in stone, and several old inns that represent the popular architecture of this corner of the Sierra de Cabrejas.
The black truffle of Villaciervos
Food and drink
Alongside the traditional wheat, barley and rye, the municipality today has some six hundred hectares of mycorrhized holm oaks intended for the production of black truffle, the crop that has renewed its farming economy.
San Juan moved to July
Activity
The festival of San Juan Bautista, patron of the village, is officially celebrated on 24 June but is moved to the second Saturday of July so that the residents who no longer live in the municipality can attend.
