What to see and do in Los Rábanos

Los Rábanos
Village
Los Rábanos is a Soria municipality in the comarca of Almazán, seven kilometres from the provincial capital, which besides the eponymous settlement brings together Miranda de Duero, Navalcaballo and Tardajos, incorporated in the late 20th century. It is bordered by the river Duero, which forms the Los Rábanos reservoir, and in the Middle Ages it belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Soria, in the Sexmo de Lubia. Its church of San Pedro dates from 1118 and was rebuilt in 1874, with a clock tower and a bell named «María», cast in 1891. A kilometre and a half away, the hermitage of the Virgen de Sinova holds the image that, according to tradition, appeared to a young shepherd; in September its pilgrimage is celebrated, with an auction of bread rolls and the raising of the image onto its throne. It now has about 470 inhabitants.
The Los Rábanos reservoir
Nature
The Los Rábanos reservoir is located in the municipality of the same name, in the comarca of Almazán, just 7 kilometres from the provincial capital of Soria. It dams the Duero River, which flows through the east and south-east of the municipality, downstream from the capital, over some ten kilometres; the sheet of water hemmed in between hillsides is a refuge for waterbirds and the most navigable stretch of the river in the province. The surrounding area, with altitudes exceeding 1,100 metres to the north and east, is partly included in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance for the banks of the Duero.
The swimming crossing of the Duero
Activity
Every summer, swimmers of all ages swim the stretch of the Duero that separates the city of Soria from the reservoir of Los Rábanos. The event, of long tradition, is held in August taking advantage of the still water of the dam.
