What to see and do in Garray

Garray
Village
Garray is a municipality of about 794 inhabitants in the Soria comarca of Frentes, on the banks of the Duero, which here receives the waters of the Tera before skirting the cerro de la Muela, where the ruins of Numancia stand, the Celtiberian city declared an archaeological zone as early as 1882. First mentioned in 927 and described in 1016 as an ancient, deserted city of the reino de Pamplona, it was repopulated in 1076 by order of Alfonso VI of Castile. It belonged to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Soria, in the Sexmo de Tera, and until the 20th century it was also known as Garray and Garrejo. It also preserves a 16th-century bridge and the ermita de los Mártires.
Archaeological site of Numantia
Monument
On the Cerro de la Muela, seven kilometres north of Soria, extends the Celtiberian city of Numancia, declared a Monumento Nacional (Spain's heritage designation in force until 1931) on 25 August 1882 and systematically excavated since 1906.
The siege of Scipio
Historical milestone
Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus surrounded Numancia with a line of circumvallation of some nine kilometres with walls, towers and palisades; after thirteen months of hunger and disease, in the summer of 133 the besieged put themselves to death rather than surrender.
The defeat of Nobilior
Historical milestone
The conflict between Rome and Numancia broke out in 153 before Christ, when the Numantines came to the aid of the Belli of Segeda and defeated the army of thirty thousand men of Quintus Fulvius Nobilior, opening twenty years of war.
The camps of Schulten
Curiosity
The German archaeologist Adolf Schulten identified around the city the seven Roman military camps of the siege, among them Peñarredonda, Castillejo and Dehesillas, which made it possible to reconstruct Scipio's strategy on the ground.
Hermitage of los Mártires
Monument
A 12th-century Romanesque church that holds the relics of four Christian martyrs and was declared a historic-artistic monument on 31 May 1944, which today gives it the status of Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection). It stands beside the hamlet of Garray, on the banks of the Duero and close to where it receives the waters of the Tera, at the foot of the Cerro de la Muela, site of ancient Numantia.
Bridge of Garray sobre el Duero
Monument
The sixteenth-century bridge crosses the Duero at the point where the river receives the Tera, a strategic ford since Antiquity that explains the position of Numancia and that of the Roman camps that besieged it.
The resettlement of 1076
Historical milestone
Garray appears documented as early as 927 and in 1016 is described as an ancient and deserted city; Alfonso VI ordered its resettlement in 1076, reactivating settlement beside the ruins of the old Arevacian city.
The 1937 airfield
Historical milestone
During the Civil War an airfield was fitted out at Garray, in 1937, used by German and Italian aviation; the plains of the Duero beside Numancia thus served, twenty-one centuries later, another military machine.
