What to see and do in Torlengua

Torlengua
Village
Torlengua is a municipality of 43 inhabitants of the former Vicaría de Serón, in the Soria district of Las Vicarías and the judicial district of Almazán, belonging to the diocese of Osma. A quarter of its territory, some 1,039 hectares, is included in the Site of Community Importance of the Quejigares de Gómara-Nájima. The 1842 census counted 91 households and 370 inhabitants, and by the mid-19th century it reached 114 houses, figures well above the current population.
La Novia de las Vicarías
Monument
The church of Santiago Apóstol is an essentially Gothic building with Renaissance additions whose slender tower is known throughout the comarca as la Novia de las Vicarías, a nickname that sums up the village's pride in its bell tower.
Islamic tower of Cántabos
Monument
Beside the ruins of the monastery of Santa María de Cántabos, shared between Fuentelmonge and Torlengua, rises, attached to them, a tenth-century Islamic watchtower that the Cistercian monks reused in their grange.
Hermitages and wine cellars of Torlengua
Monument
Torlengua preserves two hermitages, that of the Virgen del Pilar and that of San Sebastián, surrounded by dug-out cellars and abandoned winepresses that recall the vineyard that occupied these slopes before depopulation.
Portuguese oak groves of Gómara-Nágima
Nature
A Natura 2000 site declared in 2004 and covering 6,208 hectares, it protects one of the most extensive masses of Portuguese oak in Soria; in the municipal district of Torlengua it occupies 1,039 hectares, 25% of the municipality.
Golden eagle and wolf in the quejigar (oak grove)
Nature
In the Portuguese oak and holm oak woods of Gómara-Nágima the golden eagle nests and specimens of Iberian wolf have been recorded; the relief of small stony sierras alternates Mediterranean woodland with sub-steppe pastures and gypsum vegetation.
La Piedra de Quebracantos
Curiosity
In the municipal district of Torlengua an outcrop of rock so hard that it breaks the stones thrown against it is known as the Piedra de Quebracantos; the spot of La Cueva completes the singular enclaves of the municipality.
Santiago and el Pilar in Torlengua
Activity
Torlengua celebrates Santiago Apóstol on 25 July and its co-patroness, the Virgen del Pilar, on 12 October: two dates that concentrate the social life of a municipality registered at barely 43 inhabitants.
The flour mills and flax of Torlengua
Curiosity
The dictionary of Madoz describes a village of one hundred and fourteen houses with flour mills and looms that worked the flax and hemp grown in the municipal district, a complete economy that today has left nothing but ruins.
The Portuguese oak grove of Torlengua
Nature
Some 1,039 hectares of the municipal district, a quarter of its surface, are included in the Natura 2000 Network for their mass of Portuguese oak, the tree that best withstands the continental cold and the poor soils of these heights.
