What to see and do in Valderrodilla

Valderrodilla
Village
Valderrodilla is a municipality in the comarca of Berlanga, in the judicial district of Almazán, province of Soria, which also includes the settlement of Torreandaluz and belonged from the Middle Ages to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Andaluz, established in 1089 by the Fuero de Andaluz; it has 59 inhabitants. According to Pascual Madoz's Diccionario, in the mid-19th century the village had 69 houses, a fountain of good water, a hermitage dedicated to the Soledad, and lived from wheat, barley, rye and pastureland, as well as a small industry of plain cloth. On the second weekend of September it celebrates the Santo Cristo del Amparo with a mass and procession to the hermitage, and with traditional games such as tanguilla, calva and bolos.
The Parish of San Martín
Monument
The titular church of the municipality, which since the mid-nineteenth century groups the settlements of Valderrodilla and Torreandaluz; in the nineteenth century a hermitage dedicated to La Soledad, today vanished, was also mentioned.
El Santo Cristo del Amparo
Activity
On the second weekend of September the patronal festival is held with a procession and with games of tanguilla, calva and bowls, three traditional Castilian games that here still bring the residents together.
The Land of the Andaluz Charter
Historical milestone
Valderrodilla was formed within the Community of Town and Land of Andaluz, established by the first charter (fuero) of the province of Soria, granted in 1089 by Gonzalo Núñez, during the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile and León, to the village of Andaluz, situated on the banks of the Duero. From that same legal foundation came, besides Valderrodilla, the present-day independent municipalities of Centenera de Andaluz, Fuentepinilla and Tajueco, along with other places such as Valderrueda, Fuentelárbol, La Ventosa, Torreandaluz, Osona and La Seca, and the deserted villages of Quintanar and Fuentelfresno.
The Bread of the Escalote Fields
Food and drink
The dry-farmed fields at these 936 metres of altitude gave for centuries the wheat that was ground in the valley's mills; round loaves baked in a wood-fired oven are still the basis of the local table.
