What to see and do in Bayubas de Arriba

Bayubas de Arriba
Village
Bayubas de Arriba is a village of 56 inhabitants, beside the Bayubas river, a tributary of the Duero, in the comarca of Berlanga, province of Soria, and includes the settlement of Valverde de los Ajos, split off from the municipality of Boós in the late 20th century. Conquered from the Muslims by Ferdinand I around 1060, the area was not resettled until the reign of Alfonso I the Battler, and belonged from then on to the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Berlanga; the traveller Hernando Colón mentions it in 1517 as Veyugas. It disappeared as a municipality in the mid-19th century, absorbed into Bayubas de Abajo, and regained its status in the early 20th century. Its church of the Asunción is Romanesque, from the late 12th century, with a portal of archivolts over plant-motif capitals and human masks, and a semicircular apse.

Monument
Built between the end of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, it preserves a semicircular apse and a doorway of two round arches with capitals of foliage and human masks of great expressiveness.
The three bells and the Carlist wars
Curiosity
The bell gable holds three bells cast in 1682, 1906 and 1957; the oldest still bears the damage done to it by the Carlist wars, when the village lay in the path of the guerrilla bands.
The old names of the village
Curiosity
The documents call it Veyugas in 1517, Agua-Yumbas de Arriba in 1594 and Bayugas de Arriba in 1785: three centuries of hesitation over a place name that probably alludes to the abundance of water.
