What to see and do in Bayubas de Abajo

Bayubas de Abajo
Village
Bayubas de Abajo is a municipality in the comarca of Berlanga, in the province of Soria, also made up of Aguilera and La Estación. It belonged to the diocese of Sigüenza until 1957, when it passed to that of Osma. During the Civil War it was the site of executions of Republicans, whose remains, exhumed in 2006, were transferred to the cemetery of Berlanga de Duero. With 148 inhabitants, its church preserves the Romanesque apse, and within its municipal area there remain two documented Roman villas and La Taina de la Hoz, a Muslim watchtower that communicated with the castle of Gormaz.
The Roman villas of Aguilera
Curiosity
In the municipal districts of Bayubas and of its outlying village of Aguilera the remains of Roman villas have been documented, evidence of agricultural exploitation of the Duero valley long before the medieval frontier.
The Taina of La Hoz (watchtower)
Monument
The Taina de la Hoz watchtower, in the Sorian municipality of Bayubas de Abajo, is a circular Muslim tower built of roughly squared stone laid in courses and bonded with lime mortar, with thicker, irregular limestone blocks at the base and remains of lime rendering still visible on the outside. Judging by the dimensions still preserved, it must have been a large watchtower; it stands in a strategic position on the upper edge of a hill, from where it controlled the pass of La Hoz, on a secondary route leading to the main road between Berlanga and the castle of Gormaz, the largest caliphal fortress in Europe, with which it kept visual contact as part of the warning system that watched over this bank of the Duero.
The executions of the summer of 1936
Historical milestone
Within the municipality there were in 1936 two removals of prisoners, one with nine victims from Berlanga de Duero and another with about fifteen brought from El Burgo de Osma, in the repression of the war's first months.
The remodelled parish church of Bayubas
Monument
The village church preserves Romanesque elements embedded in an eighteenth-century remodelling that gave it its present appearance, with Santa Águeda as patroness and a winter festival of the women.
The Mushrooms of the Bayubas Pine Forests
Food and drink
The maritime pine sands of the municipal district give saffron milk caps and king oyster mushrooms in autumn, a harvest that in recent decades has been regulated with permits and has added income to the villages.
