The Taina of La Hoz (watchtower) Monument · Bayubas de Abajo, Berlanga, Soria Image of Bayubas de Abajo, not of the place itself. The Taina de la Hoz watchtower, in the Sorian municipality of Bayubas de Abajo, is a circular Muslim tower built of roughly squared stone laid in courses and bonded with lime mortar, with thicker, irregular limestone blocks at the base and remains of lime rendering still visible on the outside. Judging by the dimensions still preserved, it must have been a large watchtower; it stands in a strategic position on the upper edge of a hill, from where it controlled the pass of La Hoz, on a secondary route leading to the main road between Berlanga and the castle of Gormaz, the largest caliphal fortress in Europe, with which it kept visual contact as part of the warning system that watched over this bank of the Duero.
