What to see and do in Velilla de los Ajos

Velilla de los Ajos
Village
Velilla de los Ajos is one of the smallest municipalities in the province of Soria, with fifteen residents, in the district of Almazán and the judicial district of the same name. It historically belonged to the bishopric of Sigüenza, within the archpriesthood of Almazán, although today it comes under the diocese of Osma. In the 1842 census it had 71 households and 280 residents, and in the mid-19th century its settlement had as many as ninety standing houses, then surrounded by fine woods of holm oak and oak. It preserves a church dedicated to Santiago Apóstol.
The church of San Pedro over a defensive tower
Monument
The sixteenth-century church, with a Renaissance doorway and a notable baptismal font, was raised over an earlier building that included a defensive tower, a trace of the frontier past of these lands of the Jalón and the Duero.
The hermitage of San Millán in the abandoned village of Borque
Monument
About four kilometres from the village, in the abandoned settlement of Borque, stand the ruins of a thirteenth-century Romanesque hermitage dedicated to San Millán: the only thing left standing of a place that lost all its residents.
