What to see and do in Fuentelmonge

Fuentelmonge
Village
Fuentelmonge is a village in Soria of 58 inhabitants, the gallatos, in the Las Vicarías district, whose origins date back to between 1250 and 1280, although the first reliable data come from the 1530 census, which counted 108 inhabitants; the first parish baptism books, from 1588, are still preserved. Part of its territory, within the Natura 2000 network, forms part of the special protection area for birds of Monteagudo de las Vicarías. It preserves the great church of Nuestra Señora de la Romerosa, built in the 17th and 18th centuries, the hermitage of Santa Ana and the monastery of Santa María de Cántabos. Every year, within the «Que tu pueblo siga vivo» programme, the gallatos organise a cultural week with activities for all ages.
Cistercian foundation of Cántabos
Historical milestone
Alfonso VII fulfilled a promise made during the siege of Coria by bringing in 1142 Cistercian monks from the Gascon abbey of Berdoues, with their abbot Rodulfo, who settled in a poor building in the spot of Cántabos.
The monks' move to Huerta
Historical milestone
In 1162 the community of Cántabos left Fuentelmonge and moved to the Jalón valley, where it raised the monastery of Santa María de Huerta; Cántabos was thus one of the first Cistercian foundations in Spain.
Church of Nuestra Señora de la Romerosa
Monument
A church of large proportions built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries over earlier remains, with a Herrerian tower, a Baroque doorway and a façade of neoclassical air; inside a notable Baroque altarpiece stands out.
The four pairones (wayside shrines) of Fuentelmonge
Curiosity
Four pairones guard the village on its four sides, dedicated to Santa Bárbara, the Virgen del Pilar, the Virgen del Carmen and San Antonio; the oldest known one bears the date 1807 and answers to an Aragonese influence.
The Good Friday desenclavo (deposition from the cross)
Curiosity
On Good Friday, the locals who play Joseph of Arimathea, Nicodemus and Saint John the Evangelist unnail from the cross an articulated Christ; the body is then laid in a glass urn and the whole village accompanies the procession.
Laying the children down on Corpus Christi day
Curiosity
On Corpus day the custom is kept in Fuentelmonge of laying the children on the ground so that the monstrance passes over them, alongside the rogations to Santa Bárbara that are also preserved in the calendar.
Fortification of the Alto del Molino
Monument
On the Alto del Molino, above the settlement, are preserved the remains of an old fortification that watched over the Nágima valley within the line of castles and watchtowers that separated the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon.
The Special Protection Area (ZEPA) in Fuentelmonge
Nature
Some 3,977 hectares of the municipal district, around 26% of its surface, are included in the Special Protection Area for Birds of Monteagudo de las Vicarías, within the Natura 2000 network.
The gallatos and their cultural week
Curiosity
Fuentelmonge went from 604 inhabitants in the census of 1842 to 58 households in 2025; its people, known as gallatos, organise every summer a cultural week with gastronomic competitions, craft workshops and sporting tournaments.
The steppe birds of the plateau
Nature
The almost treeless plains that surround the village are the territory of steppe birds such as the pin-tailed sandgrouse and the calandra lark, species that depend on dry-farmed crops and on wasteland and that retreat with every change of land use.
The founding of Fuentelmonge
Historical milestone
It is estimated that the place was born in the second half of the 13th century, within the organisation of the border lands. Its name refers to a spring and to the monastic presence in the surroundings of the Nágima.
One hundred and eight houses in 1530
Curiosity
The first census that documents the village, in 1530, attributes to it one hundred and eight households; in 1842 one hundred and fifty-two were counted and six hundred and four souls. Today there are fifty-eight, barely 1.37 inhabitants per square kilometre.
