What to see and do in Cañamaque

Cañamaque
Village
Cañamaque is a grain-growing village in the Las Vicarías district, in the province of Soria, which belonged to the historic Vicaría de Serón; it now has 29 inhabitants. In the 1842 census it had 91 households and 374 inhabitants, and by the mid-19th century it had about 112 houses, according to Pascual Madoz's Diccionario geográfico-estadístico-histórico. Its economy has traditionally revolved around grain farming, but the widespread exodus to the cities of the 1950s and 1960s marked a turning point in the life of the village, which lost most of its population.
Church of San Juan Bautista
Monument
A Gothic church of a single nave begun at the beginning of the sixteenth century, with side chapels opened as Baroque niches. The tower was raised in the seventeenth century, of rubble masonry and with the corners reinforced in ashlar.
Circular hermitage of Santa Bárbara
Monument
Cañamaque preserves two hermitages: that of Santa Ana, beside the village, and this one of Santa Bárbara, a modest construction of circular plan situated approximately a kilometre from the built-up area.
Hermitage of Santa Ana
Monument
The hermitage of Santa Ana was restored in 1886 and had previously been dedicated to San Antón; the change of dedication explains why the main festival of Cañamaque is held on 26 July, the day of the titular saint.
The parish archive since 1532
Curiosity
The parish archive of Cañamaque preserves documents from 1532 onwards, a continuous series that makes a village today almost empty a first-rate source for reconstructing the demographic history of south-eastern Soria.
Cañamaque, town of the Duke of Sessa
Historical milestone
In the mid-eighteenth century Cañamaque was a seigneurial town of the Duke of Sessa, who also dominated several neighbouring localities; earlier it had figured as a town exempt from the jurisdiction of Almazán within the intendancy of Soria.
The Arenal stream
Nature
The Arenal stream crosses the municipal district of Cañamaque and structures a dry-farming municipality of barely twenty-three square kilometres, situated at 958 metres of altitude and occupied in good part by a hunting preserve.
Festivities of verano de Cañamaque
Activity
Besides Santa Ana on 26 July, Cañamaque holds its summer festivities on the Saturday following the Virgin of August, the date chosen so that the residents who only come back on holiday coincide in the village.
From three hundred and seventy-four residents to twenty-nine
Curiosity
In 1842 the village had three hundred and seventy-four inhabitants and some one hundred and twelve houses; today there are twenty-nine. The curve of that fall sums up the demographic history of the whole comarca of Las Vicarías.
The exodus of the 1950s
Historical milestone
The mass emigration to the cities of the 1950s and 1960s emptied Cañamaque in little more than a generation. Whole families left the dryland farms and their houses shut up, and many later returned only in summer.
The legumes and the lost vineyard of Cañamaque
Food and drink
Alongside cereal, the books of the 19th century recorded here harvests of pulses and of grapes. The vineyard disappeared with the depopulation, but the dry-farmed pulse is still the basis of the winter stews of the moorland.
The Sierra del Muedo and the Cabezuelas
Nature
Two modest alignments close the comarca: Las Cabezuelas to the north and El Muedo to the south. Between them lies an almost deforested plateau, where the tree cover is reduced to the poplar plantations that follow the course of the streams.
