What to see and do in Cubo de la Solana

Cubo de la Solana
Village
Cubo de la Solana is a municipality in the comarca of Almazán, in Soria, that brings together six settlements — Almarail, Cubo de la Solana, Ituero, Lubia, Rabanera and Riotuerto — next to the Almarail reservoir, formed by the Duero. Inhabited since Celtiberian times, it retains a hillfort with a necropolis at Los Castillejos and the remains of a Roman villa at Las Casillas; the Cañada Real de Soria drovers' road also once ran through its territory, bringing agricultural and livestock prosperity up to the Enlightenment, and the Count of Gómara built his manor house here in the 16th century. In the hamlet of Lubia, incorporated into the municipality in 1857, the nuclear facilities of Spain's aborted atomic bomb were installed under Francoism. It now has 177 inhabitants.

Nature
On the summit of a broad hill at about a thousand metres of altitude, bounded to the south by the Duero, the remains of a Celtiberian settlement with its necropolis are preserved, proof that the place was inhabited long before the present villa.
The Romanesque carving of the Virgen de la Solana
Curiosity
The hermitage seen today was raised in 1778 over an earlier one, but it keeps a Romanesque wooden image datable to around 1250: five centuries separate the carving from the building that shelters it.

Activity
The cañada real crosses the municipality and sustained its prosperity from the late Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. Its course is still passable on foot and links up with the mansion that the Count of Gómara raised.
