What to see and do in Santiuste de San Juan Bautista

Santiuste de San Juan Bautista
Village
Santiuste de San Juan Bautista is a Segovian municipality of about 534 inhabitants, including the settlement of Bernuy de Coca, located in the Campiña Segoviana, near Coca, Nava de la Asunción and Navas de Oro. It was called Sant Yuste until the 19th century and was part, possibly from the 12th century, of the Community of Town and Land of Coca, whose Neguillán company took part in Reconquest campaigns such as the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. In its municipal area existed the depopulated settlements of El Otero and Sanchón, the latter inhabited until the 17th century, whose Virgin is preserved today in the parish church. The brick church preserves a Romanesque apse and the carving of the Virgin of Sanchón; famous for its black melons, it celebrates its main festivities for the Beheading of St John, on 29 August.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Santiuste
Monument
A Romanesque church of a single nave ending in a semicircular apse, with Baroque decoration inside; it guards a twelfth-century Christ and a seventeenth-century silver processional cross, as well as the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Entre Ambos Caminos.
Carlos III frees Santiuste
Historical milestone
Documented from 1247 in the distribution of the chapter's revenues, the place depended on the duchy of Veragua until in 1773 Carlos III granted it jurisdictional independence and it was able to name its own authorities.
The 1671 Carmelite convent
Curiosity
In 1671 a Carmelite convent was founded in the village which survived the French occupation of the War of Independence and disappeared with the disentailment of 1835; of it only remains are left today among the houses.
Black melons and countryside wine
Food and drink
This corner of the Segovian countryside, bordering the Tierra de Medina, is renowned for its dark-skinned melons and for its historic link to the wines of the Rueda denomination of origin, which begins a few kilometres away.
