What to see and do in Nava de la Asunción

Nava de la Asunción
Village
Nava de la Asunción is a municipality of about 2,800 inhabitants originally known as Nava de Coca, through which pass the Camino de Santiago de Madrid and the greenway of the Eresma valley, which follows the route of the old railway between Segovia and Olmedo to the village's preserved station. Sport shapes its social life: Basque pelota experienced its heyday in the 1980s, when it hosted the European championships of cesta punta in 1980 and 1989 and the Spanish one in 1991. Founded in 1976, Club Balonmano Nava has competed in the Liga Asobal, Spain's top division, and has produced players for the national team; also notable in football were the now-defunct Nava Molduras, which reached the Tercera División, and today's Club Sporting Nava.
Eresma Valley Greenway at Nava
Activity
The old station of Nava, today restored, is one of the gateways to the greenway that makes use of the abandoned railway route; the Camino de Santiago de Madrid also passes through the municipality.
The railway from Segovia to Medina
Historical milestone
The 93-kilometre railway line from Segovia to Medina del Campo opened in 1884 as part of an alternative route to the Madrid-Hendaye line and served the villages of the Segovian and Valladolid pine woods until its closure in 1993 for lack of profitability. After the closure the tracks were lifted on the Segovia-Olmedo section, today converted into a greenway used by walkers and cyclists, where stations such as that of Nava de la Asunción are preserved; the Olmedo-Medina del Campo section, by contrast, remains without commercial service, and part of its route has been reused for the Madrid-Segovia-Valladolid high-speed line.
