What to see and do in Fuente de Santa Cruz

Fuente de Santa Cruz
Village
Fuente de Santa Cruz is a village of about 105 inhabitants in the province of Segovia, in the Campiña Segoviana. It belonged from ancient times to the Community of Town and Land of Coca; in 1247 it is documented as El Aldea de la Fuente, by the late 16th century as Fuente de Coca, and from 1789 with its current name. The Duke of Veragua and Berwick, then the owner of the place, asked Philip IV to separate it from the jurisdiction of Coca because of abuses by its chief magistrates against the townspeople; the royal licence, sealed and signed in Madrid, was not granted until the 18th century, giving it the status of a town. It preserves two old brotherhoods and the church of Santa Cruz, the work of the master stonemason Diego de Matienzo, a native of the Ruesga valley.
The separation from Coca
Historical milestone
In 1656 the residents asked Felipe IV to separate from the jurisdiction of Coca because of the abuses of the alcaldes mayores; the petition was resolved in their favour between 1772 and 1773, when the place obtained the title of villa.
