What to see and do in Navas de Oro

Navas de Oro
Village
Navas de Oro is a municipality in the province of Segovia, in the Tierra de Pinares district, with about 1,300 inhabitants, situated on the bank of the valley formed by the Pirón and Eresma rivers, 46 kilometers from the capital. The municipal area, of 62.27 square kilometers, is mostly forested: nearly two thirds are covered by a forest of pino negral pine with specimens of stone pine, home to roe deer, foxes, partridges, eagles and vultures. Its climate, a continentalized Mediterranean one, has cold winters and dry, hot summers, with a growing season of about seven months. The municipality lived off resin and pitch boiled in pegueras, and every 13 June, during the procession of San Antonio, its residents dance the Castilian jota through the streets for hours.
The village split by Alfonso X
Historical milestone
In 1258 Alfonso X divided the locality into two quarters with different jurisdictions: one depended on Cuéllar and the other on Coca. The anomaly lasted almost six centuries, until the two were reunified in 1842.
The pitch-makers (pegueros) and the resin
Curiosity
The locals are called pegueros after the trade of pitch and resin. A large factory raised in 1888 came to employ more than five hundred people around 1940 and produced 18,000 barrels of rosin and 1,500,000 kilos of turpentine a year.
The navas (highland flats) that gave the village its name
Nature
More than 64% of the municipal district is pinewood, and among the masses of pine open the navas, protected seasonal wetlands that gave the locality its name and that concentrate the amphibian life and the water birds of the sandland.
