What to see and do in Navalmanzano

Navalmanzano
Village
Navalmanzano is a town in Segovia of about 1,040 inhabitants, in the Tierra de Pinares district, 37 kilometers from the capital and 22 from Cuéllar. It sits on practically flat ground watered by the Malucas stream, a tributary of the Pirón, and by the Polendos. It was once dry-cereal land, but today its fields have turned to market-garden crops such as potatoes, carrots and, above all, strawberry plants, whose October harvest is key to the local economy; the pine forest, formerly exploited for its resin, is now used only for timber. From the late 13th or early 14th century, around 1300, come the Mudejar hermitage of Santa Juliana and a seated Romanesque-style Virgin and Child, its two most notable works of art.
Mudéjar hermitage of Santa Juliana
Monument
Brick hermitage built in Mudéjar style, around which the local legend revolves; the municipality also preserves a Romanesque carving of the Virgin and Child dated to the late 13th or early 14th century. Its construction, of the so-called brick or Mudéjar Romanesque, is very characteristic of the Tierra de Cuéllar, which holds the largest concentration of this art in Castilla y León, and it bears a resemblance to the San Marcos hermitage of Campo de Cuéllar, though it stands out for its rectangular-plan chancel. Inside it preserves a 16th-century image known as the Cristo de Santa Juliana and a Baroque altarpiece from the parish church of San Justo y Pastor. According to legend, with no historical basis, the friars who guarded it disappeared overnight.
Aniseed doughnuts and milk-fed lamb (lechazo)
Food and drink
The cooking of the village rests on Castilian suckling lamb, suckling pig and the products of the pig slaughter, and finishes with aniseed ring cakes, the sweet that accompanies the festivities of San Roque on the second weekend of August.
The strawberries of the sand flats
Nature
The Malucas stream crosses an almost flat municipal district at 837 metres of altitude whose sandy soils have made it possible to replace cereal and sheep with the growing of strawberries, which makes October the key month of the farming calendar.
