Mozoncillo
Village
Mozoncillo is a town in the Community of City and Land of Segovia, on the banks of the Pirón river, with about 916 inhabitants. Its name, documented as Moçonciello in 1247, is thought to mean “the small Monzón”, referring to the resettlers who arrived from Monzón de Campos, in Palencia, under the leadership of Count Asur Fernández. In its municipal area, next to the deserted medieval village of San Bartolomé, there also existed the now-vanished districts of Cabezas, Olmedillo, La Quintana, Rodelga and Los Santos. The parish archive, kept at the Casa del cura, records five centuries of the village's history since the Council of Trent, with baptismal registers digitized from 1547. It preserves the hermitage of the Virgen de Rodelga, from the 13th century, holds the Feria del Caballo (Horse Fair) in April and rural bull runs in August.
