Villeguillo
Village
Villeguillo is a municipality in the province of Segovia, between the Campiña Segoviana and the Tierra de Pinares, located on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid, 59 kilometers from the provincial capital. On the cuesta del Pájaro, a kilometer from the village, lies what archaeologists consider the most complex enclosure of Chalcolithic-era ditches known in the area. Its baroque church of San Pedro Apóstol, built with fired-brick masonry and rammed-earth walls, was completed in 1687, and its bell tower in 1688; with a basilical floor plan and three naves, it preserves frescoes above the presbytery and a gilded three-tiered main altarpiece. It also preserves the Real Pósito, built in the time of Charles IV to store grain and guarantee its supply in times of scarcity. It now has about 129 inhabitants.
