Village
Fresneda de Cuéllar is a village of about 162 inhabitants in the Sexmo de La Mata, in the comarca of El Carracillo, devoted to market gardening and, owing to its proximity to the Tierra de Pinares, to the processing and marketing of pine nuts. Its name refers to a place rich in ash trees. The church of la Visitación, of rubble masonry, raises a prismatic tower with a brick belfry and holds a chalice and a baptismal shell by Valladolid silversmiths from around 1700. The ermita del Rosario, on a nearby hillock, comes from the neighbouring depopulated hamlet of Alcuerna, whose church it had been, and where tradition says the emperor Theodosius the Great had the victims of Roman battles buried. The patronal festivities are held on the first Sunday of October and on 2 July, with the FresneRock festival.
Monument
Built for the most part in rubble masonry and modified in recent times, it is the village's main building; its titular, the Visitation, gives its name to the festival held every 2 July.
Monument
Among the liturgical furnishings of the parish stand out a chalice and a baptismal shell wrought by silversmiths of Valladolid around 1700, pieces of Baroque goldsmithing preserved in a municipality of barely 162 inhabitants.
Curiosity
In the municipal district there existed three settlements that ended up abandoned: Alcuerna, Olivera and Las Pesqueras. Of Alcuerna a hermitage remains that marks the site of the old settlement in the middle of the fields.
Historical milestone
The village was born within the sexmo of La Mata when the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Cuéllar was organised, at the end of the eleventh century, and owes its name to the ash trees that abounded on its banks and hollows.
Activity
The summer festivities include the FresneRock, a music festival that has become the most crowded event of the year in a village that in 2025 did not reach one hundred and seventy registered households.
Food and drink
Alongside market gardening and stock raising, the gathering and processing of pine nuts sustain the local economy; the fruit of the stone pine is one of the most valuable products of the whole Segovian sandland.
Monument
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Visitación, in the centre of the village and next to the town hall, preserves a Rococo altarpiece dated 1756, the artistic piece of greatest substance of a municipality of little more than one hundred and sixty residents.
Monument
In the district known as El Cuerno stands the hermitage of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the only vestige still standing of the abandoned settlement of Alcuerna, one of the three hamlets that occupied this municipal district before merging into Fresneda.
Monument
The parish church is recognisable from afar by its prismatic tower, topped by a brick belfry raised in modern times over the old fabric, a usual solution in the churches of the Tierra de Pinares.
Historical milestone
Beside the mill dam of Alvarado a liturgical assemblage of the Visigothic period dated to the seventh century appeared: three small jugs, a bronze paten and an iron censer on three feet.
Historical milestone
The sexmo of La Mata is one of the six divisions into which the Community of Town and Land of Cuéllar was organised, originating in the last quarter of the 11th century and lying mostly within the province of Segovia. It was located in the south-west of the community and today comprises the towns of Vallelado, Mata de Cuéllar —its historic capital, which gives it its name—, Samboal, Arroyo de Cuéllar, Fresneda de Cuéllar, Chañe and Narros de Cuéllar, as well as other, now depopulated, settlements such as Avienza, Alcuerna and Torre de don Velasco. Fresneda was included in this sexmo, which was responsible for dividing up pine woods and pastures among the villages that made it up.
Activity
The patronal feast is held on the first Sunday of October in honour of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, the virgin inherited from the abandoned settlement of Alcuerna, and closes the festive calendar that the Visitación opens on 2 July.
Nature
The municipal district is rich in lagoons and in banks associated with the river Pirón, a setting of pastures that sustained local stock raising for centuries and that today lives alongside the irrigated market garden plots of the Carracillo.
Food and drink
The market gardens of Fresneda take part in the Carracillo's specialisation in carrot, endive, leek, potato, turnip, onion and lettuce, crops that have turned this sandy comarca into the vegetable larder of Segovia.
Curiosity
Fresneda went from 246 inhabitants in the year 2000 to little more than 160 in 2025, a sustained fall that coexists with the economic drive of horticultural irrigation and with the extraction and shelling of pine nuts.
