Íscar
Village
Íscar is a town in the Valladolid part of the Tierra de Pinares, on the border with Segovia, between Olmedo and Cuéllar, on a plain crossed by the rivers Cega, Pirón and Eresma. It may have been the ancient Roman Ipsca or Contributa Ipcense, a military camp or place of rest for its militias, and it is mentioned in 939 by Muslim chronicles as Hins'Skr, “castle of Íscar”. After the 11th-century Christian reconquest, Alfonso VI resettled it with Álvar Fáñez. It belonged to the houses of Lara, Haro and Zúñiga, and from the mid-15th century to the lordship of the Counts of Miranda del Castañar until the 19th century. Its fortress boasts a pentagonal keep with cylindrical buttresses, and the Romanesque-Mudéjar church of Santa María was declared a Monumento Nacional (a former top Spanish heritage-protection designation, predecessor of today's Bien de Interés Cultural). It now has about 6,500 inhabitants.
