What to see and do in Vallelado

Vallelado
Village
Vallelado is a town of 750 inhabitants in the province of Segovia, whose town centre leans against the shelter of the Cerro de la Bodeguilla, on the left bank of the Horcajo stream, within the Community of Town and Land of Cuéllar. Its origin dates back at least to the early Iron Age, and in the mid-13th century it is documented as Sancto Thome de Valelado. It is known throughout Spain for its ajo blanco, an indigenous variety that the Vallelado Garlic Association has promoted since 2008 and which is celebrated every July at its fair. In the Torrejón area, remains of a medieval defensive tower survive, and its Minguela mill, now a hydroelectric plant, is over four centuries old. The parish church of Santo Tomás Apóstol holds a 16th-century silver processional cross.
Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol
Monument
The parish keeps a splendid sixteenth-century silver processional cross. The municipality also preserves the site of El Torrejón, with remains of a defensive tower, the mansion of La Cilla and a four-century-old hydroelectric mill.
The white garlic of Vallelado
Food and drink
Vallelado garlic is a native variety of white garlic grown in the sandy soils of this municipality and thirty others in the provinces of Segovia and Valladolid, which together account for 70% of the garlic production of Castile and León. It stands out for the large size and uniformity of its cloves, more than double those of imported garlic and easier to peel, with a bright white flavour, crunchy, spicy and aromatic, highly valued by chefs such as Karlos Arguiñano. It is sown between October and January and harvested in July, the month in which the municipality has celebrated the Garlic Folklore Festival since 1987, also known as the Garlic Fair. After the festival, residents gather around the traditional potato calderetas.
The Cega river in Vallelado
Nature
The Cega rises on the northern slope of the sierra de Guadarrama, at the fuente del Mojón spring, in Navafría (Segovia), and runs 149 kilometres through the provinces of Segovia and Valladolid before flowing into the Duero near Puente Duero. As it passes through Vallelado, at 779 metres above sea level, one can see the dam of an old water-powered mill, the fishing weir and the old bridge, as well as the Minguela bridge; the surroundings form part of the Senda de los Pescadores, a route that runs through the Tierra de Pinares alongside the river beneath a notable population of birch trees. Fishing reserves and riverside groves of poplars and willows enliven a riverbank that otherwise runs between pine woods and cropland.
