What to see and do in Maderuelo

Maderuelo
Village
Maderuelo is a walled town in the north-east of the province of Segovia, with 100 inhabitants (INE 2025) across 94.19 km² bordering Soria and Burgos; its historic centre is a listed historic site and has been included since 2013 among the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain. It sits on a hill surrounded by the Linares reservoir, which keeps an old bridge submerged. It was resettled by Count Fernán González in the 10th century; in the 12th century it came to have ten parishes and was the head of its own Community of Town and Land, though it fell into decline at the end of the 13th century and in the 14th, when part of its population left to resettle the south of the peninsula. It preserves a medieval church that houses the mummy of a young woman found nearby, and beside it a trebuchet used in the summer medieval festivities.
The paintings of the Vera Cruz travel to the Prado
Historical milestone
The Romanesque mural paintings of the hermitage of the Vera Cruz, of the first half of the twelfth century, were stripped off and transferred to canvas in 1947 in the face of the risk of flooding by the Linares reservoir; today they are exhibited in the Museo del Prado and replicas remain in the hermitage.
