Cantalejo
Village
Cantalejo is a town in the province of Segovia, situated on the watershed between the Duratón and Cega basins, with a history linked to the Duratón canyon and to the former Community of Town and Land of Sepúlveda. Its municipal area, of barely rolling relief and covered by thick sands, holds ponds and lagoons — the bodones — regarded as a local ecological treasure. In 1970 the former municipalities of Aldeonsancho and Valdesimonte were merged into the town. With about 3600 inhabitants, it is known as the village of the trilleros: its carpenters made threshing sledges, sieves and chests that they sold across half of Spain, and from that trade arose the gacería, a jargon with Basque, Arabic and Galician words in which the village is called Vilorio Sierte.
