What to see and do in Gallegos

Gallegos
Village
Gallegos is a village of the Community of Town and Land of Pedraza, in the province of Segovia, set at 1,241 metres above sea level on the western slope of the Montes Carpetanos, which makes it the third-highest municipal seat in the province; near the village, on the border with Madrid, rises the peak of La Peñota, at 1,917 metres. Founded or resettled during the Reconquista, possibly by people who came from the mountains of Galicia, from which it would take its name, it has been documented since 1204. Next to the village stands El Torregil, a Romanesque ruin of the deserted settlement of San Juan del Otero -already cited in 1247- whose standing wall is known as the finger of God. With about 96 inhabitants, at the festivities of San Juan the paloteo stick dance is danced and the botarga known as la Zorra comes out.
El Torregil, or Dedo de Dios (Finger of God)
Monument
On a hill beside the road stand the Romanesque ruins of the Torregil, perhaps a watchtower or the church of the deserted site of San Juan del Otero; a stretch of wall that remains standing bears the name Dedo de Dios.
Church of San Juan Bautista de Gallegos
Monument
A Baroque church with a stone bell tower that keeps carvings of San Juan Bautista, San Roque and the Virgen del Rosario; the village, resettled by Galician colonists, is documented as early as 1204.
La Zorra del Rosario
Curiosity
At the festivities of the Virgen del Rosario, at the end of September, out comes the Zorra, a masked and colourful character who chases the children before being burned, accompanied by dances of ancient root.
