What to see and do in Melque de Cercos

Melque de Cercos
Village
Melque de Cercos is a hamlet of about 58 inhabitants in the Campiña Segoviana, whose name, of uncertain origin, may come from the Arabic melic or malik, "the lord, the master", or from the Latin personal name Malcus or Marcus. The epithet "de Cercos" was not added until the 18th century and refers to the arroyo de Cercos, which rises at the monte de Acedos and waters the territory from south to north until it flows into the Voltoya, at Aldeanueva del Codonal. It is believed the village was founded, like other hamlets south of the Duero, after the Battle of Simancas of 1085, possibly by resettlers from Toledo. Recognisable by its building technique, with alternating courses of rounded stone, mudéjar brick and slate taken from the surroundings, it gives its houses, corrals and walls a look barely repeated elsewhere in the comarca.
