Juarros de Voltoya
Village
Juarros de Voltoya is a village in the Segovian countryside, divided in two by the río Voltoya, whose reservoir forms pools where mallards, herons, little egrets, coots, storks and, in winter, cormorants take refuge; a waymarked path beside the poplar grove runs along the weir. It has existed as such since 1247, when it was called Xuharros de Boltoya — a name derived from the Basque zuhar, "elm", for an elm grove near the river — and later belonged to the abadía de Párraces, to which it paid tribute. Its church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, a modern building raised after the old temple fell into ruin, preserves an image of the patroness without an altarpiece and a fine crucifix. It has about 185 inhabitants, and on 28 December the young men elect a mock magistrate, a custom dating back to the Middle Ages.
