Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa
Village
Martín Muñoz de la Dehesa is a village of around 309 inhabitants, the westernmost in the province of Segovia, situated in the Campiña Segoviana at 836 m of altitude. The oldest document mentioning it, from 1240, calls it San Juan de la Dehesa; the name “de la Dehesa” comes from the extensive dehesa created in 1273 by Alfonso X for the Concejo de la Mesta between Arévalo and the village, through which transhumant shepherds passed on their way along the Cañada Real Leonesa Oriental. Fountains and pools where livestock used to drink are still preserved, such as El Regajal, of brick, or La Huelga and the Fuente de Palazuelos, of granite. It celebrates Santa Águeda from the 4th to the 8th of February, carrying two images of the saint from house to house on wooden poles, and it is one of the few small villages in the area gaining residents.
