What to see and do in Donhierro

Donhierro
Village
Donhierro, in the northwest of the province of Segovia, in the Campiña Segoviana district and the judicial district of Santa María la Real de Nieva, sits on flat ground at 808 metres above sea level, beside the río Adaja and near the border with Ávila; it covers 17.22 km² and has fewer than a hundred inhabitants (73 in 2025). It is documented in the mid-13th century as Don Fierro, after a resettler of that name, within the Comunidad de villa y tierra de Arévalo; it belonged to the province of Ávila until the provincial reorganisation of 1833, which transferred it to Segovia. Its parish church of San Lorenzo is a Baroque building of brick and rammed earth, with a two-tiered bell-gable and a dome over the crossing. It celebrates San Lorenzo on 10 August and San Isidro on 15 May, as well as a Three Kings parade with a live Nativity scene.
Church of San Lorenzo
Monument
Baroque church of brick and rammed earth raised over an earlier one of Romanesque-Mudéjar style, as happens in a good part of the towns of the comarca. It has a single nave with two side chapels, a dome over the crossing and a bell gable of two sections at the foot.
Manor house of Botalhorno
Monument
Some 1,600 metres northeast of the town centre there survives the manor house that gives its name to the deserted village of Botalhorno, a seigneurial hamlet of the Montalvo lineage. It never exceeded nine households in the 16th century and was left uninhabited shortly after 1826.
The countryside and the Adaja river plain
Nature
Donhierro is situated on the cereal plain of the Campiña Segoviana, a moorland of sandy and permeable soils over large aquifers, dotted with witness hills. The municipal district extends between the courses of the Adaja, to the northwest, and of the Voltoya.
Festivities of San Lorenzo
Activity
On 10 August the main festival is held in honour of San Lorenzo, titular saint of the parish, with festive events and sporting competitions. The calendar is completed with San Isidro, on 15 May, and with the night-time procession of the Virgen de la Soledad in Semana Santa.
The resettler Don Fierro
Curiosity
The place name comes from that of a settler of the 13th century: in the middle of that century the place is cited as Don Fierro, a form that derived into Don Hierro and ended up welded into a single word. In the municipal district there are also remains of Chalcolithic occupation.
From the Arévalo district to Segovia
Historical milestone
For centuries the town formed part of the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra of Arévalo, framed within the sexmo de la Vega, and therefore belonged to the province of Ávila. The provincial reform of Javier de Burgos, in 1833, transferred it to the province of Segovia.
Roast suckling pig
Food and drink
The local cooking is that of the Tierra de Arévalo, a little more than seven kilometres away: suckling pig or tostón roasted in a wood-fired oven, Castilian soups and stews of dry-farmed pulses. Pork and cereal have been the basis of the larder throughout the campiña.
