Marazoleja
Village
Marazoleja is a locality in the province of Segovia, in the Comunidad de Villa y Tierra de Segovia; its name is a diminutive of neighbouring Marazuela. The territory was already inhabited in Roman times and is first documented in 1247, in a parchment from the Segovian cathedral archive. Rural exodus has reduced its population to a quarter of what it had in 1930: today it has about 98 inhabitants, traditionally devoted to agriculture and livestock farming. Its church of San Juan Evangelista, late Gothic with a Baroque chancel, holds a mudéjar coffered ceiling with octagonal ribs and a Baroque main altarpiece with Solomonic columns and paintings by the Segovian artists Francisco Herranz and Luis Gomes, from the late 17th century; its homemade orujo is distilled in family stills.
