Sangarcía
Village
Sangarcía is a town in the province of Segovia (Castilla y León), in the Campiña Segoviana, about 32 kilometres west of the capital, born of the Castilian resettlement of the 11th and 12th centuries and named in honour of Sant García, Benedictine abbot of the monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza and counsellor to Ferdinand I. Its history was tied to the abadía de Párraces, under whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction Cobos de Segovia and Etreros also fell, today districts of the municipality. In the 18th century its inhabitants were famous muleteers, trading flour and wheat with Madrid. With about 281 inhabitants, its Baroque brick church, from 1684, is declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (Spain's highest level of heritage protection); its encierros, documented since 1702, are a traditional bull-running spectacle, and Cobos and Etreros belong to it.
