Marugán
Village
Marugán is a municipality in the Campiña Segoviana set amid woods of pine, holm oak, black poplar and ash, watered by the arroyo Santa Cecilia and the río Zorita, which rises at Villacastín and flows into the Moros, forming a valley of poplar and ash groves. It was part of the Comunidad de Ciudad y Tierra de Segovia as crown land, though it was under the jurisdiction of the abadía de Santa María Real de Párraces from 1186; when the Hieronymite monks arrived in 1562, the municipality litigated at length to free itself from the abbey. During the Guerra de la Independencia, French encampments were set up nearby, which harmed the whole comarca. With about 775 inhabitants, it preserves the Renaissance church of San Nicolás de Bari and houses with engraved granite lintels.
