Moronta
Village
Moronta is a municipality of Vitigudino, in Salamanca, with two settlements, Moronta and its hamlet Escuernavacas, with 73 inhabitants in total (INE 2025) over 27.70 km². Its origin is attributed to the repopulation by Ramiro II of León in the 10th century, later reinforced by Alfonso VI and Ferdinand II, who ceded lordship of the town to the Order of Santiago until the 15th century. Afterwards, Moronta and neighboring Guadramiro formed a lay lordship of the Maldonado family, who from 1763 held the title of Marquises of Castellanos, until the end of the Ancien Régime. In 1904, twenty-four residents of Moronta bought the territory for 379,500 pesetas, until then the property of the marquises. The population, which in the mid-19th century stood at around 94 inhabitants, keeps declining: between 2000 and 2018 alone it lost 42%.
