Encina de San Silvestre
Village
Encina de San Silvestre is a municipality in the Salmantine comarca of Tierra de Ledesma, with 111 inhabitants, founded during the repopulation carried out by the Leonese kings in the Middle Ages within the Alfoz de Ledesma. It disputes being the birthplace of the humanist and musician Juan del Enzina, born in 1468, who is said to have taken his pen name from the village. It depended on the county of Ledesma until the 19th century, when in 1833 it passed to the province of Salamanca; its parish church is dedicated to San Miguel. In 2002 the municipality approved its own coat of arms and flag.
The pseudonym of Juan del Enzina
Historical milestone
Some authors place here the birth, in 1468, of the humanist and musician Juan del Enzina, father of Spanish theatre, who is said to have taken his pen name precisely from the name of this settlement of the alfoz of Ledesma.
