What to see and do in Casafranca

Casafranca
Village
Casafranca is a municipality of 69 inhabitants, with the hamlet of Aldeanueva de Campomojado, part of the comarca of Guijuelo, in the sub-comarca of Entresierras del Alto Alagón. It was born from the resettlement undertaken by Alfonso IX of León in the early 13th century within the alfoz of Salvatierra, and during the Ancien Régime it was an annex of Fuenterroble de Salvatierra, from which it eventually broke away; with the creation of the provinces in 1833 it was included in Salamanca, within the León Region. In the mid-19th century it had 140 residents, double today's number; between 2000 and 2018 its population fell by 23%. Served by the SA-212 road, which links Tamames with Guijuelo and gives access to the Ruta de la Plata, it lacks regular bus or train services, Guijuelo being the nearest station.
The resettlement of the alfoz of Salvatierra
Historical milestone
The place was born of the resettlement that Alfonso IX of León promoted at the beginning of the thirteenth century, when it was incorporated into the alfoz of Salvatierra; during the Ancien Régime it was a mere annex of Fuenterroble de Salvatierra, from which it eventually broke away.
An annex turned municipality
Curiosity
The municipal district today brings together two settlements, Casafranca and Aldeanueva de Campomojado, in 29.61 square kilometres. With 69 inhabitants in the 2025 register, it has fewer than half of the 140 that Madoz counted in the mid-nineteenth century.
The dehesas of Entresierras
Nature
The municipality lies in the sub-comarca of Entresierras, at the head of the Alagón, a corridor of dehesas between the Sierra de Francia and the Sierra de Béjar where holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks and chestnuts mix with broom and French lavender.
