What to see and do in San Esteban de la Sierra

San Esteban de la Sierra
Village
San Esteban de la Sierra is a municipality in the province of Salamanca (Castile and León), in the comarca of the Sierra de Francia, within the sub-comarca of Las Quilamas, at 619 metres of altitude, surrounded by mountains including the monte Tiriñuelo, which gives its name to the village's wine, awarded the Espiga de Plata in 1997. The río Alagón crosses the lower part of the village before flowing into the Tagus, and a good part of the land is devoted to growing grapes. With around 343 inhabitants, against the 540 of the mid-19th century, San Esteban grew on a Jewish quarter with its own neighbourhood documented in the 15th century, when it was called Santisteban. At its Cristo festivities the Castillo is burned and a young man climbs a branchless mast up to the prize.
The bridge over the Alagón
Monument
The village preserves a bridge over the Alagón that everyone calls Roman although it is of medieval fabric, probably a reconstruction of the original. The centre keeps the layout of the Jewish quarter that gave rise to it, with adobe and timber houses on slopes down to the river.
The Burning of the Castillo
Activity
The festivals of the Christ open with a tradition of medieval root: a young man climbs the mast of a stripped tree to reach the prize hung at the top —for decades now, a ham— while at his feet a pyre several metres high burns.
