What to see and do in Arabayona de Mógica

Arabayona de Mógica
Village
Arabayona de Mógica, in the comarca of Las Villas, was called Forniellos when the Leonese kings repopulated it, later becoming Hornillos and, after passing through the plain Arabayona, only settled on its current name in the 1990s; it has about 318 inhabitants. It belonged to the quarter of Villoria, within the archdeaconry of Salamanca and the Kingdom of León. Today it is one of the main potato producers in the area, with its own markets for selling it. Its five festival days, the last weekend of October and the following Monday and Tuesday, revolve around the pilgrimage of the Santísimo Cristo de Hornillos, a reminder of that old name, with open-air dances, games and fairground rides.
The church of Nuestra Señora de la Zarza
Monument
The sixteenth-century parish church presides over the houses of the former Hornillos and holds a notable group of religious imagery. Its dedication, Nuestra Señora de la Zarza, points to the Marian devotions linked to apparitions in the Salamanca countryside.
The hermitage of the Cristo de Hornillos
Monument
The hermitage stands over the church of a former convent of Basilian monks who occupied the place from 1637 until the expulsion of the religious orders in 1834. It preserves a Baroque altarpiece and is the destination of the best attended pilgrimage festival in the comarca of Las Villas.
The pilgrimage of the Cristo de Hornillos
Activity
On the last weekend of October, and the following Monday and Tuesday, Arabayona strings together five days of pilgrimage festival around the Cristo de Hornillos: an event that can gather some two thousand people at the hermitage in a village of little more than three hundred.
The Christ that does not cross the bridge
Curiosity
The original image of the Cristo de Hornillos does not process through the streets of the village: a belief rooted among the residents attributes collective misfortunes to the carving crossing the bridge near the hermitage, so a replica goes out at the pilgrimage festival.
Forniellos, the resettled village
Historical milestone
The village was born in the Early Middle Ages with the Leonese resettlement under the name of Forniellos, under which it is documented in the thirteenth century within the quarter of Villoria; from that form derived the Hornillos that still names its Christ.
The recovered name of Mógica
Historical milestone
The municipality was called successively Forniellos, Hornillos and, simply, Arabayona; it was in the 1990s that it officially adopted the present name, Arabayona de Mógica, which evokes the former lords of the place.
The potato of Arabayona
Food and drink
The settlement is one of the most important potato-producing centres in the province, destined both for domestic consumption and for national and international sale, with markets devoted to it in the village itself during the harvest season.
