What to see and do in Aldealengua

Aldealengua
Village
Aldealengua is a municipality in Las Villas, in the province of Salamanca, with about 730 inhabitants over barely 5.5 km²; it stretches alongside the SA-804 road, with the río Tormes as the municipal boundary on the other side, where rowing, swimming and camping are practised. Repopulated by the kings of León, it appears as Aldealuenga in 13th-century documentation, a name that in the Leonese spoken at the time meant distant or long village. Its church, dedicated to Santiago Apóstol, was completed around the 15th century on the remains of a 12th-13th-century Romanesque-Mudéjar building, and had rooms where pilgrims leaving along the Camino de Santiaguillo used to rest. It combines old houses with new buildings and has a sports centre, a medical clinic, a church and a seniors' club.
The place name Aldealuenga
Curiosity
In medieval documents the settlement appears as Aldealuenga, a form that in the Leonese then spoken along the Tormes meant «long hamlet» or «distant hamlet»; from it, through phonetic evolution, the municipality's present name derived.
The village of the cuarto of Villoria
Historical milestone
Resettled by the kings of León, the hamlet already appears in the thirteenth century as part of the quarter of Villoria, one of the divisions into which the jurisdiction of Salamanca was split within the Kingdom of León; in 1833 it was placed in the new province.
The Tormes floodplain in Aldealengua
Nature
The Tormes forms the boundary of the municipal district and runs parallel to the SA-804 road, which orders all the houses on its left bank; within barely 5.48 square kilometres, the floodplain of poplars and ash trees concentrates the municipality's irrigated land.
The Saint John festivities in Aldealengua
Activity
The patron saint festivities are held on 23 and 24 June, around the summer solstice and the feast of San Juan Bautista. With some 730 inhabitants in the 2025 register, Aldealengua is one of the most populated municipalities of Las Villas.
