What to see and do in Calzada de Valdunciel

Calzada de Valdunciel
Village
Calzada de Valdunciel is a municipality in the comarca of La Armuña, in the province of Salamanca, about 13 kilometres from the capital. It owes its name to the passage through its territory of the Vía de la Plata (Silver Route), from which Roman remains have appeared, including a funerary monument that today serves as a parapet at the spring known as Fuente Buena: a granite stele with a reclining female figure, her right hand beneath her breast and the other holding a vessel for libations, perhaps of mead. It was resettled by the kings of León in the Middle Ages, within the quarter of Armuña in the jurisdiction of Salamanca, and appears in the documentation of the time simply as Calçada. It has about 717 inhabitants.
The name of the Vía de la Plata
Historical milestone
Calzada de Valdunciel was called simply Calçada in medieval documents because the Vía de la Plata, of Roman origin, crossed its municipal area; the remains found in the municipality confirm human traffic along this route from long before the Leonese repopulation of the 9th and 10th centuries.
The resting place of Las Parás
Nature
The minor place name of Las Parás designates a rise that served as a natural resting place for those returning wearied from the water mills of the Tormes or of Valcuevo, after the long climb from the valley up to the cereal-growing moor.
