What to see and do in Ledigos

Ledigos
Village
Ledigos is a hamlet of about sixty inhabitants on the Palencian stretch of the Camino Francés, known until the 19th century as Bustillo del Páramo. It had a pilgrim hospital dedicated to San Lázaro, demolished in 1752, whose stone, timber and ironwork were reused in the hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Vallejera, a kilometre and a half from the village. Its church of Santiago Apóstol, from the 17th century, stands on a small rise from which the nearby Terradillos de los Templarios can be seen, and holds a crucifix attributed to Juan Sáez de Torrecilla; according to some historians, it is the only church on the whole pilgrim route to depict the saint in his three guises, pilgrim, apostle and matamoros. It celebrates Santiago Apóstol on 25 July.

Monument
The church of Santiago in Ledigos stands on a hill on the Camino de Santiago from which the next town on the route, Terradillos de los Templarios, can be seen. Doña Urraca gave Ledigos to Santiago Apóstol in 1028, placing it under the Chapter of the Compostela Cathedral, and in the 13th century a church was built here in his honour, remodelled around the 17th century; in the 20th century its original bell tower collapsed and was replaced by the present brick bell-gable. It is a single-nave building covered by a groin vault that houses four altarpieces, from the 16th to the 18th century, among them a rococo one in the presbytery with sculptures from different periods. It is, moreover, the only church on the whole Camino that depicts Santiago in his three guises: Apóstol, Peregrino and Matamoros.

Curiosity
The parish church holds the three representations of the apostle —pilgrim, apostle and Moor-slayer— gathered in a single church, a combination that is not repeated at any other point on the Camino Francés.
Demolition of the San Lázaro hospital
Historical milestone
The pilgrims' hospital of San Lázaro, which came to be of some importance on this stage of the Camino de Santiago, was demolished in 1752 and its materials were reused to build a nearby hermitage.
