Church of las Santas Justa y Rufina Monument · Payo de Ojeda, La Ojeda, Palencia The church of Santas Justa y Rufina, in Payo de Ojeda (Palencia), is a church in transition between the Romanesque and Gothic styles, with a single nave covered by a barrel vault and a ribbed presbytery. It is dedicated to two Sevillian sisters, potters from a Christian family, martyred around the year 287 for refusing to pay tribute to a pagan feast in honour of Venus and to renounce their beliefs before the prefect Diogeniano, who subjected them to torture on the rack and with iron hooks before leaving them to die in prison. Venerated as saints by both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, in Payo de Ojeda they are celebrated on 19 and 20 July, dates close to their Sevillian feast day of 17 July.
